recording smell

Apparently engineers in Tokyo are creating a device that can record and playback smells. This device caters to the human's 347 olfactory sensors by synthesizing smells using 96 chemicals that can be mixed to create a range of smells. Smell is, of course a great trigger of memory recall so it would really be interesting to see how this could be used to create a truely sensorially stimulating account of an experience. myspace agreement change

I saw on the Digital Music News blog that myspace have changed their terms of agreement to reflect artist ownership of their content. Apparently myspace do not now lay any claim to artists' content and have clarified their position with the latest version of the agreement. This follows a move by Billy Bragg to remove his content from myspace in protest of the previous claims made in the terms of agreement.

Good news for artists everywhere!

my past interest in numismatics

I used to be interested in numismatics, that is, coin collecting. I think I still have quite a big collection at home that I haven't looked at in many years! Anyway, I saw with interest that the US government is issuing a new gold minted coin, officially a $50 piece, but with a collection value of much more. This is the first time they've issued a pure gold coin for investing and for collecting. It may make a good investment! More at http://www.usmint.gov

peaches in Chicago

heads up! Peaches plays Chicago this coming weekend. She's playing three times, as a support to NIN, as headline at the Vic, and with Greg Haus at the Funky Buddha on July 4th. Check that out at http://www.funkybuddha.com/ As far as I can tell you don't need tickets to the Funky Buddha gig, it just an event you turn up to. Lets find out what she thinks about her reputation!

pimp my heart

This is interesting, connecting your heart to your driving experience via a sub woofer! It basically amplifies and plays back your heartbeat enabling new types of experiences, including auditory, haptic and visual. More at http://www.takehitoetani.com/hbbb.html

what I'm reading

I'm currently reading Michael Cunningham's latest book, Specimen Days. You can see more at http://literati.net/Cunningham/CunninghamBooks.htm

I'm enjoying it. It makes me want to know more about Walt Whitman.

Cymatics

A friend of mine introduced me to the concept of Cymatics recently. This involves the use of sound waves, or vibrations to create physical patterns. It is a kind of physical spectrogram, in a way. Perhaps this can be an explanation for crop circles? See more at wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cymatics

13 years later, a lesson

It's been 13 years since my last piano lesson, so I decided it was time to go back. Since I got my piano a few months ago I've been improving my playing and I think it is now back to my old level. I'm trying the lessons to give me direction in my playing.

It went well. The pieces he suggested I work on include:

Beethoven's Sonata Pathetique

Debussy's Reverie

Debussy's Girl with the Flaxen Hair

Bach's Invention (#4)

possibly a Haydn sonata (#7)

Mary Verne's Phrygian Toccata

It's certainly a lot to keep me going! I might look into taking an exam after a while.

I bought a new camera

I recently purchased a digital camera. It's a 10 megapixel casio exilim and I love it! Great quality, easy to use, large screen. And it's surprisingly slim for such a high quality camera. What I really like is that I can use it for movies and voice notes too. The site is exilim.casio.com

I'm wondering if there's any good freeware or cheap video editing software out there?
