r u 4 it?

It had to happen eventually. Teachers and academics are noting that TXT lingo is creeping into assignments of teen students.

According to the Seattle Times, high school students are handing in assignments with shortcut words, such as 'u' or '4'. Even more concerning; the speed at which electronic communication is typically composed is also affecting the students ability to put thought into the composition of prose, according to the article.

Some college professors have observed similar patterns, so I suppose it is only a matter of time before some of the shorthand becomes widely accepted.

social networking for singers

SingShot is an online social networking site for people who like to sing songs. Targeting the myspace generation, singshot allows users to record, upload, categories and share their music.

The group works with music licensing houses, so by giving a range of songs for you to choose to record, the legal issues around copyright protection are accounted for.

Using partner site, Photobucket, users can upload photos and videos to accompany them.

SingShot can be seen here.

popularity dialer

this is a fun site that allows you to stage a fake phone call to get you out of tricky situations. Two NYU students came up with this handy tool that has a pre-recoded voice call you to let you pretend you're engaging in a realistic conversation. I think I remember it was featured on NPR in the US.

if I were in holland

If I were in holland next week I would like to visit the Noise Room. This is an installation and sound exposition series presented by STEIM academy. It features a number of works by prominent artists and electro-acoustic composers played in 5.1 surround with performance-optimized audio, tailored to the acoustics of the theatre, the Melkweg Theatre. Artists whose work will be performed include Stereolab and Mouse on Mars. See www.noiseroom.org for more details.
